Alternative scenarios for the early geological history of the terrestrial planets and the moon are considered. It is shown that the cataclysmic bombardment of the inner planets by planetesimals about 4 billion years ago is neither required nor excluded by lunar data and that Mariner 10 imagery does not provide independent evidence for or against an early episodic bombardment of Mercury. It is concluded that photogeological studies by themselves cannot establish absolute chronologies for Mars, Mercury, and the moon.
