The nonlinear evolution of an elliptically polarized MHD wave in oblique propagation is studied, both in one-dimensional configurations and with a weak transverse modulation superimposed. Both analytical and numerical techniques are employed. In the two-dimensional evolution, two main mechanisms that play a role in the wave evolution are identified: a transverse instability, resulting from the transverse modulation of the steepening velocity induced by the initial perturbation, and a self-focusing effect, which is a consequence of variations of the total pressure in the transverse direction. The theoretical predictions made here are in good agreement with the features observed in solar-wind waves.
