The nine known enstatite achondrite meteorites contain very similar mineral assemblages indicative of formation in a strongly reducing environment. Their major mineral phase is enstatite with an abnormally low content of iron. Luminescence of the enstatite is apparently allowed by the low iron content and influenced by the concentration of manganese. Most of of the enstatite achondrites have been brecciated and the pyroxene severely deformed. Deformation has resulted in the conversion of some enstatite to clinoenstatite and may also be responsible for the presence of disordered enstatite.
