A combination of NASA/ESA's Hubble Space Telescope and the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope has revealed the 3-D movements of gas in distant galaxies, and sprung some surprises for observers.
For International Year of Astronomy 2009 there are several initiatives worldwide to get telescopes into the hands of more organizations, institutes, schools and individuals. In the UK, the Society for Popular Astronomy is organizing the distribution of 1000 telescopes to schools.
