The propagation of Pc1-Pc3 pulsations in magnetospheric ducts is examined. It is shown that an Alfven waveguide can exist in ducts in the form of cylindrical plasma structures when (u)(k sub z)(R) is greater than beta, where beta is about 1. The longitudinal variation of the duct characteristics causes (u)(K sub z)(R) (which is much greater than unity at the equator) to become less than beta with distance from the equator; consequently the waveguide disappears. Attention is given to conditions under which the effective amplification of Pc1 pulsations occurs in the near-equatorial instability region.
