Some of the methods for direct measurement of the upper-atmosphere temperature by optical methods are reviewed. The radiative-transfer problem is considered, and the transfer equation illustrates further discussions. The subjects under survey are mainly the obtention of the temperature profiles by inversion-profile techniques, Fabry-Perot interferometric determinations of line broadening, hydroxyl rotational temperatures, lidar measures, and the thermalization regions of far-infrared emissions.
