Charged or rotating black holes (BHs) resulting from the collapse of the cores of massive stars can, in principle, be a source of considerable energy. This energy source has been suggested as the origin of gamma-ray bursts. I show that the plasma density around such BHs is always sufficiently high so as to make the suggested mechanisms for energy extraction inviable.
