A relation is proposed between the number of dimensions and the
curvature of the vacuum, based on the principle that the internal energy
of a compact manifold should be conserved during a dimensional
transition. One then finds, by applying the criterion of smallest
euclidean action, that flat space-time must be four-dimensional.
