The characteristics of hiss emissions triggered by lightning-generated whistlers are studied based on observations of the DE-1 satellite obtained between December 28, 1986 and January 18, 1987. The results suggest that these emissions may constitute the dominant wave activity in the 1.5-6-kHz range on L shells of 3.5-3 in the afternoon sector during geomagnetically quiet periods. The lightning-generated waves may play a dominant role in the loss of 0.5-50-keV electrons trapped on these field lines in the afternoon sector, and may also provide a loss mechanism for ring current protons.
