Results are presented on the growth and development of field-aligned bubbles of low-density plasma in the tropical nighttime F region, detected in images taken on Mount Haleakala, Hawaii, on 6300-A and 7774-A plasma recombination emissions; these observations are related to the ionospheric conditions. The images obtained illustrate some of the many field-aligned depletion structures that are observed in the nighttime equatorial ionosphere. The evolution of these structures was followed, and the changing of the drift velocities and shear motions were observed for plasma on magnetic shells of different apex heights. Results were found to agree with prior observations and theoretical studies.
