This paper describes the results of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) observations by the Viking satellite, whose four probes were designed to measure all parameters of the plasma processes involved in auroral phenomena. The AKR was observed in a large number of Viking's orbits, and, in cases of 35 orbits, the satellite passed through the AKR source regions. These sources were found at the poleward edge of the auroral oval at altitudes from 5000 to 8000 km, predominantly in the evening sector. In addition to AKR, strong broadband electrostatic noise is measured during the source crossings. Complete data sets are presented for a few typical source crossings, and the observations are discussed in the framework of a theory of AKR generation.
