A theoretical analysis of the replenishment phenomenon for M-type geomagnetic disturbances and flare-related disturbances is presented. It is shown that the replenishment of the ring current in the recovery phase has a significant effect on the course of the disturbance. This phenomenon gives to Dst variations an irregular (often wavy) shape. As for flare-related disturbances, the replenishment has a more modest (though still appreciable) effect, usually leaving the Dst variation curve unchanged.
