Observations of solar ultraviolet radiation from the satellite OSO-IV are analysed. The atmospheric absorption of 1032 Å (O VI) can be reproduced theoretically by a static diffusion model of the O 2 , density above 120 km with a density of (3.6 ± 0.4) x 10 10 cm -3 at 120 km. The atmospheric absorption of 1335 Å (CII) appears to require an effective absorption cross section of O 2 that decreases with increasing altitude. The decrease could result from an increasing vibrational development of O 2 , such that the fraction of molecules in the ground vibrational state is less than about 0.9 at 130 km, 0.7 at 150 km and 0.5 above 160 km.
