Imaging radars on Seasat, the Space Shuttle, and aircraft have shown that features of near-surface water circulation can be detected through their modulation of surface roughness. This is an important addition to satellite ocean imaging of colour and infrared patterns, since radar penetrates cloud. So far the number of available images has been too small for use in oceanographic studies. We plan to use the greater amount of data from the ERS-1 SAR to show coastal circulation in regions of the east, west and Hudson Bay coasts of Canada where surface modulation is expected to be visible and where ongoing studies require this type of information. Sufficient coverage is planned to assess the variation of feature visibility with season, and to determine the influence of wind speed and surfactants. The extent of the Canadian program is described, sample images are shown and first results are presented from a Vancouver Island study area.
