The paper attempts to show that the existence of an ancient lunar general magnetic field may be inferred from the moon's present paleomagnetism and that conditions must have been right for a now-defunct lunar core dynamo in the period between 4.0 and 3.2 billion years ago. Observations are discussed which demonstrate that the paleoshape and paleogravitational field of the moon may be inferrred from the present figure of the moon. It is argued that the low harmonics of the shape of the moon give information about its paleogravitational field, that the solidified surfaces of mare basalts may be paleogravity surfaces, and that the present nonhydrostatic figure of the moon must have been acquired subsequent to the filling of the mare basins.
