Vacuum Testing Methods, Leak Detectors

A device which senses the direction of molecular flow inside a large vacuum chamber can detect leaks. Such a device becomes useful when the usual helium leak detection methods cannot be used, as when local application of helium to the outside of the vacuum system is not possible. A theoretical analysis of the detector sensitivity is given, together with experimental measurements of sensitivity, angular resolution, and noise levels in a prototype device.
