The detection of narrow forbidden lines of O(2+) together with H-beta, H-gamma, and H-delta lines of hydrogen observed at optical wavelengths toward the nebula of SN 1987A are reported. This system of lines has a velocity of 286 km/s with respect to the sun and a velocity spread of 15 km/s (FWHM). For electron densities below about 10,000/cu cm, the temperature determined from the forbidden O III lines is 55,000 K. The forbidden O III 5007 shows an angular extent of about 2 arcsec together with a velocity gradient of about 10 km/s across the nebula.
