The present volume discusses such topics in the field of astronomical instrumentation as liquid-He-cooled Fabry-Perot spectrometers, a relational data base approach to astronomical research, a diffraction-limited fiber-optic lens, the design of a multiple-star photometer, the semiautomated detection of interplanetary objects, a CCD imaging stellar photometer, UV prime focus spectrography, a fiber-coupled CCD/echelle spectrograph system, a second-generation spectrograph for the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Kitt Peak Observatory's 4-m telescope Risley prism system. Also treated are novel design concepts for compact CCD controllers, an analysis of two classes of grazing-incidence mirror for use with Rowland circle spectrometers, HgCdTe focal-plane arrays for low-background astronomical applications, a mid-IR astronomical Fourier-transform spectrometer, the solution of the lost-photon problem in image intensifiers, digital image centering, a shearing interferometer for astronomical wavefront sensing, dead-time effects in pulse-counting Digicon detectors, and a wide-field multiobject spectroscopy system.
