The frequency and latitude dependence of sunrise modal interference was investigated as observed over long west-east VLF propagation paths. Modal interference spacings were found to be constant to within 10% over a 0-60 deg latitude range for this direction of propagation and no significant anomalies associated with trans-equatorial propagation were observed. Comparison with middle latitutde east-west data suggests that modal interference spacings are slightly greater for propagation to the west than to the east. The locations of two-mode signal minima at night are derived and used to explain some propagation asymmetries previously reported in the literature.
