The structure of the magnetosphere, deduced from observations in spacecraft, is described, together with some of the phenomena that occur in it. A simple non-mathematical outline is given of some of the processes involved. The effects of the magnetosphere on the aurora, and on the magnetic field observed at the ground, are described, and the way they change during magnetospheric storms is discussed. The objective of the forthcoming International Magnetospheric Study (IMS) is described.
