THE origin of the energy in the powerful radio sources presents one of the major problems in present-day astrophysics. It is generally accepted that the radio emission arises from the synchrotron mechanism, and Burbidge and Burbidge1 have shown that the energy requirements are at a minimum when there is approximate equipartition between the magnetic and particle energies.
