RECENT close-up photographs of the lunar surface on the western shores of Oceanus Procellarum, televized back to Earth by the Russian soft-lander Luna 9 on February 4, revealed for the first time the detailed micro-structure of typical mare ground down to a cm-mm scale. While the conspicuous surface roughness manifest on this scale could have been anticipated from previous radar-echo work1, and while most-if not all-of it may be due to micro-meteoritic etching, this new evidence of severely local nature gives rise to wider issues concerning the origin of lunar maria which have so far not been mentioned in this connexion.
