The day-to-day variability of Sq has been studied by using IGY data for a world wide network of stations. Correlation coefficients for ranges in H at different pairs of stations were calculated. The correlation falls off rapidly with the distance of separation of the stations, reaching 0.5 for separations of about 40° in longitude and about 15° in latitude. No significant difference is found between the behaviour of electrojet stations and other tropical stations. It is suggested that these results make it seem likely that most of the day-to-day variability of Sq is due to variations in dynamo driving force rather than ionospheric conductivity.
