Theoretical models of electron and ion density in the night-time D-region have been derived, the objective being to reproduce the characteristics of the experimental profiles available for conditions of middle latitude and low solar activity. The ionizing agents of the atmospheric gases below 90km at night are considered to be galactic cosmic rays and precipitated electrons. It is shown that the ionization distribution is strongly dependent upon the concentration of atomic oxygen and ozone, and different theoretical models for these constituents have been used in the computations. Four species of negative ions are considered to be important and, at all heights, those having high electron affinities are most abundant. It is shown that the reaction O3- + N2 --> NO2- + NO must be considered the main removal process for O3 in order to obtain a reasonably good agreement between the computed and observed ionization profiles.
