Greenwich data for proper motions of the components of sunspot groups are analyzed. It is found that only 4 percent of the 408 examined sunspot groups do not show systematic proper motions of the components at the beginning of their life. Interpreting proper motions as the results of ascending subphotospheric magnetic flux tubes, information on characteristics of the tubes have been deduced. The influence of proper motions on the evaluation of the sunspot rotation rates is discussed.
