Geomagnetic Field: Reversals
Scientific paper
Geomagnetic inversions are one of the consequences of the impacts on the Earth of giant asteroids. The energy of these impacts propagates within the Earth in the form of seismic waves. Reaching the lower mantle, they cause disruptions of its integrity. Blocks of material of the lower mantle separate, and if their density is greater than the density of the material of the liquid part of the Earth's core, they sink into it. As a result, relief with amplitudes of the order of 12 km, detectable from seismic data, arises on the boundary of the core with the mantle. Part of the blocks of magnetic material reaches the surface of the solid subcore of the Earth and creates relief of this surface with amplitudes of up to 23 km, also revealed by seismic data. Blocks in large number simultaneously sinking disrupt the meridional convection in the liquid part of the core, which creates conditions for the onset of a geomagnetic inversion.
