A hydrodynamic model of the convective high-latitude ionosphere is used to suggest the possible cause of large increases (several thousand degrees) of electron temperature in the main ionospheric trough in the evening and morning sectors. The cause of this heating is associated with the simultaneous occurrence of three conditions: (1) low values of electron density in the F-layer in the night sector; (2) heating of electron gas in the upper, solar-illuminated part of the F2-layer near the terminator; and (3) low values of the neutral-atmosphere density, which usually correspond to low levels of solar and magnetic activity.
