Recent Earth-based measurements and results from the first decade of space exploration have led to a new level of understanding of Mars and Venus, which permits a perspective view of some of the major issues concerning the inner solar system. The following are discussed in this review: the interiors; crustal dynamics; water, carbon dioxide and the early history of an atmosphere; life on the inner planets; comparative meteorology; photochemical processes; planetary environments.
