The vertical transport velocities of O and N2 in the height range 200-500 km are derived for simple models of the thermosphere. Also, we discuss the Brunt-Väisälä, diffusion and collisional time constants. If the O/N2 ratio is perturbed, recovery to steady state is controlled by diffusion; the diffusion time constant exceeds 1 day below about 150 km.
