This article considers whether there are cultural elements which may lie behind the tendency of physics to be a more popular option with boys than with girls. Girls' preference for other subjects is seen in many educational systems around the world, and there is no obvious way to make things more equal. The author argues that to make sweeping assumptions about male and female preferences is liable to create more problems and that good teaching should meet the needs of individuals.
