The effects of wave-particle interactions on upward field-aligned currents (FACs) are studied using one-dimensional particle simulations. The simulations are performed with a one-dimensional finite-size particle code, and the two boundaries of the domain are plasma sheet and ionospheric. In the model the potential difference across the simulation domain is fixed and constant fluxes of electrons and ions are provided from the plasma sheet boundary. The ionospheric boundary provides plasma of ionospheric origin and reflects the accelerated electrons outside the loss cone. The FAC in an adiabatic plasma and a turbulent plasma are examined; FAC density, electron velocity distributions, and the behavior of the plasma sheet electrons are analyzed. The simulations reveal that the FAC density is reduced by about 30 percent from the adiabatic FAC density when the current-carrying electrons are accelerated by the field-aligned potential drop. The mechanism that reduces the FAC density is described.
