The behavior of the ionospheric plasma under the effect of a strong electromagnetic wave is discussed. The ionosphere was studied under varying conditions while being illuminated by a HF modifier operating at HF frequencies of 3.16, 4.2, 5.1, and 7.9 MHz and with a varying frequency separation. Signals reflected from the ionosphere were monitored at Arecibo using spectrum analyzers. The nonlinear transfer function of the plasma is measured; strong nonlinear effects were observed when the frequency difference was several Hz. The relation between the sidebands, contained in the HF signal, and the frequency diffference is examined. The strengths of the first sidebands increased when the difference between the two pumping frequencies decreased. A nonlinear relation between sidebands and pump field strength is also detected; the sideband power varied between 15-20 dB being strongest for 3.16 MHz and weakest for 7.9 MHz.
