The conflicting concepts embodied in two new telescopes, the Mark A.
Aaronson mirror and the New Technology Telescope (NTT), are examined,
and their significance for future large telescopes is addressed. The
choice among active optics, rigid mirrors, and mosaic mirrors is
discussed. The optical qualities of the NTT are briefly described.
