Various states of the magnetosphere are examined to determine a set of conditions for the baseline (quiet) magnetosphere and to show that these conditions are regularly met. The low-altitude morphology of the convection electric field, precipitating particles, and field-aligned currents are reviewed for the case where the baseline magnetosphere is well defined by the lowest intensities of each of these quantities. Consideration is given to the study of cusp entry, steady convection, and open and closed field lines, under baseline conditions.
