Very large mirrors and point supporting density are discussed. Aspherization by elastic relaxation methods is covered and in situ variable asphericity Cassegrian mirrors are described. The study emphasizes that active supporting systems are a necessity for making very large mirrors. It is noted that, together with replication methods, active masters generate efficient corrective gratings and can be used for making a large number of fast medium size parabolas as required by optical arrays.
