A projection is made of the atmospheric turbulence-correction performance characteristics of adaptive optics, on the basis of the design features of such currently available components for telescope applications as deformable mirrors, wavefront sensors, etc. A representative adaptive-optics system designed for operation in the 2.2-micron K-band in a future 8-m diameter telescope with 0.75-arcsec field of view will consist of 100 'subaperture' segments. Even a partial adaptive-optics system will be beneficial for interferometric imaging with future telescope arrays.
