Mesospheric wind measurements were obtained by the Mu radar at Shigarki, Japan on September 20, 1985 in order to investigate gravity wave breaking. It is demonstrated that the breaking of a monochromatic wave is connected with the convective instability in the wave field. The present results allow the local stability to be estimated from the wind data.
