Since its separation (~ 130 Ma) from the mainland, the Indian subcontinent has experienced major evolutionary changes. A comparison of the structure, evolution and tectonic elements of the east and west coast reveals characteristic differences. Thus, while the eastern coast shows significant anomalous behaviour in all geophysical observations, in contrast the corresponding observations on the western coast are relatively devoid of such anomalies. In this investigation available Magsat, gravity, electromagnetic (GDS) and heatflow data have been utilized to search for a possible coherent cause for these different anomalies and thereby some inferences are sought to relate these causes to the geodynamics of this part of the Indian plate.
