A critical analysis of the present state of research into the negative polarization of light mechanisms is made. Several groups of mechanisms are considered, among which are: (1) double Fresnel reflection without considering electromagnetic phases, (2) refraction of light emerging from a semitransparent medium, (3) diffraction by the edges of particles, (4) the effect of shape of individual scatterers, and (5) coherent amplification of backscattering. A correlation is made between calculations performed in the context of corresponding models and experimental data. On the basis of the correlation, it is concluded that the most probable cause of the negative polarization occurrence (as well as the opposition effect of brightness) is the interference of rays which travelled equal distances in the medium.
