Improvements in the determination of the earth's potential over the last four years are presented. GEOS-3 and other satellite radar altimetry has permitted contours of the ocean geoid to be determined with an accuracy of 1 m, and gravity anomalies to be determined with an accuracy of 3 to 8 mgals, significantly greater than the accuracy of shipboard gravimetry. Recent solutions have computed spherical harmonics up to degree and order 36, on the basis of satellite tracking data, altimetry and gravimetry; computations have also been made by surface density layers and additional linear combinations of gravity coefficients. Further progress is expected to be limited by difficulties associated with orbit calculation and sea surface effects, however satellite-to-satellite tracking data provides an alternative means of obtaining a refined geoid at sea as well as over land masses.
