This paper reviews convection in the earth mantle and in terrestrial planets. The lithospheric plates of plate tectonics are created from hot mantle rock at ocean ridges and descend into the mantle at ocean trenches. The oceanic lithosphere as a thermal boundary layer of a mantle convection cell, the ocean trenches and island arcs, marginal basins which develop behind ocean trench-island arc systems resulting from a convection pattern induced by the descending lithosphere at an ocean trench, and a model for continental lithosphere which predicts the subsidence of young ocean crust are discussed. The hydrothermal circulation in the continental crust, magma migration to produce surface volcanism, the mantle rheology, modeling and multiple scales of mantle convection, and the driving forces of plate tectonics are described. Finally, the thermal evolution and convection in the moon, Mercury, and Mars are examined.
