Scientific paper
Based on thousands of observations of the transit of Mercury across the
sun's disk, the value of the horizontal refraction in its atmosphere was
found to be equal to 0.51 arcsec. It is suggested that, if the pressure
on the Mercury surface is about 0.4 millibar, this refraction value may
be due to an argon atmosphere.
