Hysteresis measurements are presented for dispersed single domain (SD) titanomagnetite particles precipitated in silicates, and for dispersed pure magnetites in a large data suite covering more than three decades of grain size. The grain size dependence of domain structure is in excellent agreement with the theories of Butler and Banerjee and Moskowitz and Banerjee, but in contradiction to previous experimental results regarding the pseudo-single (PSD) to multi domain (MD) transition for magnetite. The threshold is found here to be near 3 microns. The magnitude of coercivities is also in discrepancy with those of previous synthetics, being lower for SD titanomagnetite and MD magnetite and higher for SD magnetite. The temperature dependence of coercivity reveals the dominating anisotropy of SD grains: strain and shape for titanomagnetite and magnetite, respectively.
