Simultaneous high-spatial-resolution Magsat magnetometer measurements and high-time-resolution optical measurements (from a photographic camera and a meridian scanning photometer) of an auroral arc over Svalbard, Norway are combined to study the relationship between the fine structure in the field-aligned reversals and the temporal and spatial morphology of the auroral structure. The current carried by the energetic electrons responsible for the auroral arc is shown to be smaller than the field-aligned current found from the magnetic perturbations, indicating the presence of a large flux of low energy particles in the arc. Data suggest that the rayed structure is related to the field-aligned current reversals.
