The prediction and forecasting of the particle and field environment within the magnetosphere is of importance to the Air Force. Conditions within the magnetosphere are linked to conditions within the solar corona by the following chain: the coupling between the corona and the solar wind in the vicinity of the sun, the propagation of the solar wind from the vicinity of the sun to the vicinity of the earth, and the coupling of the solar wind at 1 AU to the magnetosphere. A review is presented of the present knowledge of the coronal-solar wind coupling along with a brief description of problems that remain for the development of an enhanced capability to predict the level of geomagnetic disturbances. Recommendations for a 3 year and a 10 year research plan to address these problems is also included.
