Sondrestrom radar observations, obtained on November 14, 1985, of a polar cap arc connected to the auroral oval near local midnight are presented and analyzed. The development of a model of electric fields, and perpendicular and parallel currents associated with the sun-aligned arc by combining radar and ground-based magnetometer data is described. Electron density is examined as a function of altitude and invariant latitude. Ionization and drifts connected with the sun-aligned polar cap arc are studied. Hall and Pedersen conductances, and plasma drift velocities are calculated. It is observed that the perpendicular electric fields, when combined with the distribution of aurorally-produced conductivity, require a strong upward current at the junction where the polar cap arc connects to the oval. The upward current implies the presence of enhanced electron precipitation which may account for the observed brightening of polar cap arcs where they intersect the auroral oval.
