New 21-cm line observations of early type galaxies made with the Nancay radiotelescope are presented, for which the percentage of detection is low. In order to understand the reason why some early type galaxies are gas-rich and the majority of them are gas-poor, four galaxies were observed in more than one position, and their hydrogen diameters calculated. The trend of the ratios of H I to the optical diameter is found to be greater than expected by the extrapolation of the law previously obtained for spiral galaxies, a very important result which has to be confirmed.
