Lanczos' (1961) method of power series economization was used to reduce
the number of terms in harmonic polynomials which approximate the
earth's potential. It is shown that the present method leads to fewer
errors than the partial sum of a series of spherical harmonics. The
results obtained are valid for any earth-type planet.
