Giant jets of superfast particles are a feature of galaxies with supermassive black holes at their centres - but those galaxies are almost always elliptical. Now the second spiral galaxy to show such behaviour has been found, and it turns out to produce these large jets episodically, in a pattern found in one other elliptical galaxy only.
Astronomers can now watch star formation as it happens, by watching time-lapse movies made from 14 years of Hubble Space Telescope images of jets from young stars, phenomena that change over periods of a few years.
