Because of the importance of increasing the sensitivity of micrometeoroid-detection experiments, a Van de Graaff microparticle accelerator was used to investigate the general properties of micron-sized impact craters in various surface types. Of the 22 surfaces studied, glass, Au film on lucite, and A1 film on glass were found highly efficient in displaying impacts and could be used for statistically meaningful determinations of flux and species in spite of the low particle flux implied by many recent rocket and satellite measurements.
